Today, one year after choosing the alternative “solution” proposed by Attiko Metro in agreement with Kallitsantsi brothers’ AKTOR, those who have access to the construction sites of the Thessaloniki Metro find them empty and silent.

The year 2020 was supposed to be a milestone year for the “long-suffering” Thessaloniki Metro, since it was scheduled to start operating according to the original plan. Nevertheless, a year ago, all of sudden, Kyriakos Mitsotakis announced – from the podium of the 84th Thessaloniki International Fair (TIF) – the decision to detach and reposition the archaeological finds at the junction of Egnatia and Venizelou streets, so that the “Venizelos” Metro station could open. Mr. Mitsotakis stated at the time that the existing solution “was a non-solution”. In fact, he stressed that “it was not costed, it was extremely uncertain if it was technically possible and it would lead to the paradox of having an incomplete Metro without the Venizelos station”. A quite long extension was announced and the dreams of the people of Thessaloniki, to finally see their Metro operating, were postponed until 2023 at best…

According to reliable information, only a few days before the Prime Minister returns to Thessaloniki, there is deep concern in the Maximos Mansion, since the project is not proceeding as promised by the executives of Attiko Metro, chaired by Nikos Tachiaos, and the contractors of AKTOR. As a matter of fact, people close to the Prime Minister, in private discussions, put the blame on the executives of Attiko Metro and don’t hesitate to admit that Mr. Mitsotakis was “trapped” by… peculiar suggestions, as it was made apparent in retrospect.

Today, one year after choosing the alternative “solution” proposed by Attiko Metro in agreement with Kallitsantsi brothers’ AKTOR, those who have access to the construction sites of the Thessaloniki Metro find them empty and silent. However, ΑΚΤΟR doesn’t seem to be getting the short end of the stick in this situation. On the contrary, it has already summarily received new compensations without court decisions, for the first time. Meanwhile, it continues to claim tens of millions of euros, with the “blessings” of Attiko Metro.

In particular, some officials in Maximos Mansion claim that this whole plan that was set a year ago and the suggestions that were made back then resulted in the Prime Minister falling victim to the greed of the contractors that keep claiming more and more profits – and not only from this particular project.

According to some market executives with good knowledge of the whole situation, the “gifts” given to ELLAKTOR in the form of direct award contracts were definitely not incidental – they were rather used as a means to earn money and keep the Kallitsantsis brothers in the faltering ELLAKTOR Group.

However, these same people, who happen to be close to the Prime Minister, emphasize that “the glass has already broken” and that the blackmail can go on no more, so the prosecutors will soon take over the case.

If the TIF were to take place, then the statements of the Prime Minister would be anticipated with particular interest, as he would definitely make a statement about the Thessaloniki Metro.

For all this entanglement, there are many who put Nikos Tachiaos in the frame. A longtime member of New Democracy, Tachiaos is a Rural and Surveying Engineer. During his student years, he was a member of DAP-NDFK and president of ONNED in Thessaloniki. For several four-year terms, he served as municipal councilor of Thessaloniki, while he has also served in several state positions.

Nevertheless, among other things, as reported by party officials in Thessaloniki, he managed to achieve the impossible. He failed to be elected mayor of Thessaloniki despite the great support he had from New Democracy, at a time when ND achieved sweeping electoral victories in European and national elections. However, he always remains in key positions of the party, while he does not hesitate to warmly refer to the close relations he maintains with Dora Bakoyannis.
