For the first time, key operational requirements, such as that of the Area Air defense, will be ensured. The purchase of top-notch French FDI HN frigates introduces the Hellenic Navy to a new era, with unprecedented new technologies and operating capabilities.

However, the much-needed participation of the national industry will play a crucial part. The Hellenic Defense Industry is a leader in many sectors, with a series of great achievements at European and international level, focusing mainly on communications, electro-optics, command and control systems.

For reasons related to national security issues, our country must have the ability to largely support the weapons systems of the Armed Forces at national level. Therefore, the main objective is to ensure the participation of Greek companies in the program, through the undertaking of construction work. This issue primarily concerns the security of the supply chain of the main manufacturers (OEMs – Original Equipment Manufacturers).

One of the many Greek companies with great expertise and experience, stemming from its participation in numerous armaments programs in the past years, is INTRACOM DEFENSE (IDE). IDE can serve as a powerful domestic partner for the Hellenic Navy’s New Frigate and MEKO Warship Upgrade programs. Recently, the company stood out through its successful implementation of the Hellenic Navy’s communications modernization program, as well as through its participation in the European program “OCEAN 2020”.

IDE has previously participated in important large-scale projects of high technological value, developed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, such as the following:

Building the main electronic modules of the CROTALE NG and APG-68 (V9) radars, for the Hellenic Armed Forces and third countries. Moreover, IDE built the ARTHUR Weapons Location Radar for the Hellenic Army and the complete 3-D HARD (Helicopter and Aircraft Radio Detection) radar for international customers of the OEMs.

Design, development, and manufacturing of electronic missiles, including the telemetry system, the power supply of the guidance system, and the field testing apparatus of the IRIS-T short-range air-to-air missile. IDE, as a member of the international industrial consortium, is actively involved in the design and production of telemetry electronics for the Block1 and Block2 ESSM (Evolved Sea Sparrow Missile) missiles currently in use by the Hellenic Navy. In addition, it manufactures electronic modules for the Rolling Airframe Missile (RAM).

Manufacturing and integration of ground electronics of the PATRIOT PAC3 system. The project included the construction of launch stations, the development of the test stations’ system, as well as their integration and testing. The company has also participated in the Hellenic Army’s modernization program of the medium-range Hawk missile, by building the Fire Control Unit and the main parts of the radar and launch systems.

Participation in the production of the integrated suite ASPIS II (Advanced Self-Protection Integrated Suite) for the fleet of Block 52 and F-16 aircraft of the Hellenic Air Force.

Participation in the S-Class Frigate Mid-Life Modernization Program of the Hellenic Navy through the development of subsystems of the EDO CS 3701 ESM system. Furthermore, IDE undertook the installation, commissioning, and HAT & SAT operations of the system.

Development of main electronic and electro-optical systems for the Leo2 MBT (Main Battle Tank).

Thus, IDE could participate as a major industrial partner in the Hellenic Navy’s New Frigate & MEKO Frigate upgrade programs, serving as a domestic subcontractor to the main contractor and the OEMs of main subsystems, and undertaking the field of work related to products and equipment supply, co-production works (construction under license) and services such as on-board installation, commissioning, testing, and technical support, as well as maintenance services (Follow on Support), in the following areas:

  • Combat sensors and electro-optical systems
  • Communication Systems
  • Weapon and missile system electronics
  • Unmanned systems

IDE is just an indicative example, given that there are numerous Greek companies that can demonstrate rich industrial work. It is therefore unfortunate that the domestic Defense Industry has not received a single euro from any material acquisition program in recent years. Take for example the case of Kiowa helicopters, the case of M117 Guardian, and other greater programs, such as that of the Rafale fighters. Even in the most recent programs of the anti-tank Spike missiles and the M-270 MLRS, under the current circumstances, the involvement of the Hellenic Defense Industry is not provided for, resulting in the Greek companies targeting mainly programs of third countries.

In conclusion, the main objective and main pursuit remains the undertaking of a project by the Hellenic Defense Industry, either through main programs or through sub-programs of industrial participation in Hellenic Armed Forces programs, and this should also be a key goal of the political leadership of the Ministry of National Defence. Otherwise, the forecast for the course of ΗDI in the medium term is ominous and leads with mathematical precision to its decline and shrinkage. Therefore, its involvement in the new frigates, and potentially corvettes, programs is an urgent national need, both for survival and national security reasons, with regard to the support of defense equipment.
